Coho Harvest More Than Doubles in Prince William Sound

Statewide salmon harvest reaches 83.6 million fish, 70% of ADF&G's forecast. Sockeye are at 85% statewide, Bristol Bay at 92%. Coho are surging across Prince William Sound, Kodiak and Southeast Alaska.

Statewide commercial salmon harvest stands at 83.6 million fish, 70 percent of ADF&G's 119.9 million-fish forecast, per the Blue Sheet through August 28. Sockeye (reds) are at 37.6 million fish statewide, 85 percent of the 44.1 million-fish forecast, with Bristol Bay at 92 percent of its 32.9 million-fish projection. The week's biggest movers were coho (silvers), which ran hard across Prince William Sound, Southeast Alaska and Kodiak.

  • Prince William Sound coho: 150K fish cumulative, up 120.6% week over week from 68K fish a week ago. PWS sits at 17 percent of its overall forecast, the furthest behind of any district.
  • Southeast Alaska coho: 461K fish, up 38.4% from 333K fish the prior week.
  • Kodiak coho: 157K fish, up 46.7% from 107K fish the prior week.
  • Southeast Alaska pink (humpies): 16.2 million fish, up 30.3% from 12.4 million fish the prior week.
  • Kodiak district: 14.7 million fish total, 98 percent of the 15.0 million-fish forecast.
  • Cook Inlet: 1.17 million fish, 111 percent of the 1.06 million-fish forecast, the only district past 100 percent.

Late August: sockeye wind down and pink and chum (dogs) carry the volume, with coho rising across multiple districts. Per ADF&G's August 28 inseason summary, management in Southeast's District 6 will shift focus from pink salmon escapements to wild coho abundance. A second Chinook (kings) troll retention period opened August 13 by emergency order and remains open. McKinley Research Group's August 25 harvest update for ASMI reported 31 percent of the statewide coho forecast counted as of that week.
